WE BELIEVE IN SUSTAINABILITY
FOR GOOD

SUSTAINABILITY

Every consideration made within Elcowire Group is to contribute toward a sustainable society. In our strategy our work with sustainability is central. It is about to reveal risks and find the opportunities in everything we do. We should deal with the environment and resource scarcity such as water, chemicals and raw materials, giving our employees a safe working place and being a sustainable company in terms of financial sustainability.

SUSTAINABILITY GOALS
GUIDANCE FOR LONG TIME APPROACH

Sustainability is about the society we live, the the environment and responsible finances. These three aspects are necessary for a
sustainable development and all in focus for our reporting. The UN Sustainabilty goals set out the path to sustainable development and it requires of us an organization to contribute. There are 17 global sustainability goals and Elcowire Group will use these as guidance for our long term approach.

Elcowire has its own Code of Conduct which includes whistleblowing policy. In the Code of Conduct human rights and anti-corruption are important parameters. By introducing the Code of Conduct in the operations and explaining the meaning to our employees we make sure that they understand.
Our employees have been introduced to the Code of Conduct.

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL APPROACH

Our environmental approach involves to minimize any impact on the environment, such as to air, land and water. Our operations should not harm the nature and the impact should be minimized. As a consequence of our environmental work environmental aspects are assessed in respect to a life cycle perspective and risks. Risk assessment are always a part of our daily work or if a new investment is considered.

We are setting environmental targets to improve.

WATER USAGE

One of the UN Sustainability Goals is “Clean water and sanitation for all”. Water scarcity affects around 40 percent of people in the world. By being conscious about water scarcity and promote less water usage this will be a contribution to the sustainability goal.

WE CONTINOUSLY IMPROVE OUR CHEMICAL AND WASTE HANDLING

Our chemical managment includes the selection of new chemical to as less harmful as possible both to the environment and to our people. At the end of life time the handling of the used chemicals is very important not to pollute anywhere in our society. Risk assessments are continously updated to avoid problems related to health, environment and fire safety. Our chemical management supports e.g. European Reach regulation which intends to restrict and minimize the use of harmful chemicals.
Our waste mainly consists of waste oils, emulsions and metal scraps, and is handled through sorting in fractions collected by local waste handling companies.
The waste streams, excluding metals and emulsions, are relatively small. Emulsion, classified as hazardous waste, is sent for destruction.
When it comes to our metal scrap we don’t see it as waste. Our material in our customers’ products are fully recycled at the end of the life time.
Used metals are very attractive as a resource and often much more cost-efficient to use than virgin metals. It is therefore an example where we globally have become very good at closing loops. For example at our site in Helsingborg any excess material from the drawing and extrusion processes is re-melted in our own furnace and used in our production.
Our waste handling and processing of materials supports the idea of going from linear flows to circular flows. This does indeed support the idea of circular economy and a more sustainable society.

WELFARE OF OUR EMPLOYEES

OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) is an important key measurable at Elcowire Group.
To follow up and benchmark our companies a common standard has been set for the absence of our empolyees.

We are continuously making risk assessment regarding health and safety. These risk assessments are being documented and different risk levels have been identified. We strive to have common standards for the OHS within Elcowire Group for risk assesments.

In Elcowire there are two measurable for health and safety; accidents and absence. Reporting is done every month with the month’s outcome for each company.

JOINT INNOVATION & IMPROVEMENT PROCESSES

Our products contribute in many ways in sustainable development and operation of the communities in which we live, both rural and in cities. As an example our conductor materials for high-voltage cables are used to connect energy distribution systems, such as linking offshore wind farms to the grid and also in projects connecting power grids between countries and regions.

Elcorim Light is a product of alloyed materials.
Elcowire has developed its own production technology for magnesium alloy copper contact wires for high speed trains. The technique involves the wire being given a much higher conductivity, lower power losses and it allows the load to be increased.
The new magnesium alloy wire can also replace large amounts of the older cadmium alloy copper contact wiring. Two of Elcowire’s units have collaborated in this development: Thanks to the improved properties of the wire, Elcowire has been awarded railway projects where the higher conductivity was one of the decisive factors.

We are focusing on products for the car industry on the European market. What has made this product segment so successful is that we have a very open product development process, working closely together with our customers. When it comes to wiring for cars, product development has saved costs and lowered the environmental impacts of the life-cycle of the wiring.

SUSTAINABLE IMPROVEMENTS

Lean as a concept plays an important part of our success.
Basic lean principles are for example standardized work, leveling, just in time, right first time, visualization etc.

By using the lean principles and clear targets in the operations related to our vision and mission, we will create a sustainable culture in our companies.
It is important to have clear priorities to be able to make fast decisions in the daily management. We use the following priorities in the operations:

1) Health, Safety and Environment
2) Quality
3) On-time delivery

We have clear targets which support our vision and values. Targets are monitored on a monthly basis and communicated to our employees.

By systematically reducing different kinds of waste according to the lean concept, Elcoway will contribute to a sustainable development.
